My VOIP number doesn’t care where it is used from

Fairfax are reporting that ACMA are reviewing phone numbers within Australia.

My SIP Number (VOIP) while notionally an 02 Prefix can be used from anywhere. E.g. I use it from the Fring app on my iPhone. I’ve been able to do this since install (around 5 years).

Quoting from the article:

“There is no technical obstacle to a number used in connection with a VOIP service being used in any place in Australia, challenging the traditional tying of geographic numbers to specific geographical areas,” the ACMA pointed out.

But more than all this, we call people not numbers.

Google got this and introduced Google Voice to fix the problem.
