Pay walls for news will produce ‘more corpses than successes’, says report | Journalism.co.uk Editors’ Blog

Ovum won’t allay the fears of many media executives.

“Paywall experiments by traditional media in 2010 are virtually guaranteed to produce more corpses than successes,”

The idea that one vendor devices will work in the long haul is quite insane. And, as I’ve blogged before, one media devices like the Kindle will work in the short term so those who aren’t insane are pinning their hopes on that. But if they see the holy grail as an Apple or any other companies “Tablet” just because it has worked for Music, I suspect the description above will be quite apt.
I think it must be remembered that Music – and to a lesser extent TV Shows, Games and Movies – is something which people will keep coming back to. News is just that, something people rely on NOW to stay informed. Who reads a news story from 5 years ago?
If they get the Subscription $ right AND everyone else Paywalls, it might work. But in 2010? Too soon
